Cortijo de Suerte Alta: an exclusive organic olive oil in a bioclimatic oil mill in the province of Cordoba

Cortijo de Suerte Alta is a family-owned property in central Andalusia, located on the right hand margin of river Guadajoz, close to the village of Albendín, in the municipal district of Baena (Córdoba).

In 1924 the Marquis of Bedmar began the transformation of their farm, which up until then had been dedicated to meadowland and cereal plantations, into an olive grove. The traditional olive varieties from the Baena region, Hojiblanca, Picudo and Picual were planted to 13 meters distance each with a density of 75 trees per hectare following the customs of the time, so as to favor pollination and control of harvest alternation.

The present owner, Manuel Heredia Halcón, Marquis of Prado, and a grandchild of the previously mentioned Marquis, took charge of Suerte Alta in 1986, finalizing the olive tree plantation for an average density of 205 trees per hectare. Taking the reins of the company, the young architect had already clear two concepts: the quality of the olive oil and the respect for the environment. The family owned company was and is today a matter of pride, since it has been focusing on extra virgin olive oil for almost 100 years.

All the olive oils of Suerte Alta, the Natural Coupage and Picual de Envero, have an organic certification guaranteeing the absence of residues from herbicides, insecticides and chemical composts as well a certificate of origin since the olive oil is sealed, analyzed and qualified by a panel of eight experts directly in the olive mill. The organic farming methods have given rise to the formation of a mantle of autochthonous vegetation that covers the terrain during the rainy season, favoring the production of an olive oil that is full of very characteristic aromas, tastes and nuances. The Suerte Alta oils are famous all over the world since they are among the most awarded olive oils: many the prizes won in Great Britain, Israel, Japan, Italy, France, USA, Germany and obviously in Spain.

The olive mill has been built and opened in 2006: conceived by Manuel Heredia, the oil mill has been designated as a modern bio-climatic building, in order to minimize energy costs and guarantee perfect conservation and stability to the oil stored in the cellars, both in winter and in summer. Thus the difficult balance between consumption and production of energy is achieved by passive climate control, vegetable screens, photovoltaic solar collectors and the recycling of the olive stones to be used as biofuel.

Manuel tells us that “during the harvest 2006/07 the new machinery for the olive oil extraction had been installed since without the best machinery, one cannot produce the best extra virgin. For this reason we use Pieralisi machinery where each part in contact with the oil is in stainless steel, thus optimizing the quantity and quality of olive oil obtained.
The mill has two extraction lines from Pieralis. The first line, working at a lower temperature in a system hermetically closed so that the oil can keep all its aromas and tastes, is composed of a horizontal kneading module with two containers and a SPI-222 S decanter with a Panorama vibro-filter. The second line, working at a higher temperature in order to recover part of the olive oil that hadn’t been extracted in the first line, is composed of three kneading modules and a SPI-55 decanter
.”

The union between Pieralisi and Suerte Alta, as Manuel assures us, has given great results and we are sure it will continue to give great joys in the olive oil world.

We wish Suerte Alta every success and we are sure they will because they do their job well.
