Villacarillo, the biggest olive mill in the world

Sociedad Cooperativa Nuestra Señora del Pilar is the biggest olive mill in the world, located in Villacarillo in the district of La Loma y Las Villas in the province of Jaen, in the middle of endless fields of olive trees.

Today Villacarillo has the most modern and productive technology in the sector. The olive mill was built on a soil of 160.000 square metres where besides the olive mill there are also other buildings and warehouses, it has a surface of more than 15.000 square metres and a capacity of crushing more than 2,2 million kilos per day.

The origins of Villacarillo go back to 1966 when its founder, Jose Maria Pastor Bueno, started the cooperative from a site composed of an olive mill, a yard, a warehouse and 10 presses, kneaders and rollers.

Today Villacarillo looks like an airport: the new structure, inaugurated in 2011, has eighteen receiving lines, an olive mill with 14 Pieralisi continuous systemswith the most modern technology by Pieralisi and a big team of workers who are moving from side to side.

Cristóbal Gallego, the President of the Governing Council, has been the main supporter of the huge qualitative and quantitative leap in the last years. The cooperative of Villacarillo strengthened the commercial aspect by bottling both Cazorliva, its own extra virgin olive oil brand and Prologo, through JAENCOOP Group, although the the core business is unbottled olive oil. The cooperative is composed of 1.721 active members, a surface of 14 million hectares of olive groves with 1.600.000 olive trees and a production which varies between 62 and 97,5 million kilos of olives and between 13 and 20,5 million kilos of olive oil.

As the President says: “It is not only a matter of producing quicker and more but of optimizing every phase of the production, from the harvest to the bottling of the olive oil”

The new site is a model to follow for those who wants a great production in olive oil of quality. Here some details of the olive mill:

Receiving area: there are 18 lines (16 for the cleaning and washing of olives and 2 for the discharge of fruits already washed). Each olive grower has a microchip for the harvest method and the production area. This method allows to guarantee a correct traceability that certifies food safety.

Production area: the plant, installed completely by Pieralisi, is composed of 14 continuous systems, 10 of them are for the first extraction. The main machines are: 24 crushers, 14 AR-18000 kneading modules, 12 SPI-444 Decanters, 2 SPI-555 Decanters, 10 Saturno vertical separators and 1 Protoreactor which is last technological revolution by Pieralisi.
These machineries for big amounts of production have components that reflect the last technological progress in terms of efficiency, safety and profitability and allow the extraction of olive oil of really high quality.

Storage area: it has 156 tanks with different volumes (between 30.000 and 180.000 kg) for a total capacity of over 17 million kilos.

The accurate processing and packaging of Cazorliva extra virgin olive oil, with its peculiar flavor and color, essential characteristics of Picual, the excellent variety of olive growing in this area, make the Cooperativa Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Villacarrillo one of the consumers most favorite brands.

This case history has been possible thanks to the hard work of all the cooperative members who are undertaken in making Villacarillo the biggest and most important cooperative in the world in the olive oil sector. For this Pieralisi congratulates with all of them, both for the efforts undertaken and the trust placed on our company, leader in the production and quality.
